Throwing down the gauntlet

In response to “You’re Never Getting Your Minilogue Back”:

Dearest Ethan,

Sir, I accept your challenge. While you’ve basked in the analog glow of voltage controlled oscillators, I’ve increased my power as well.

You dual wield two synths of incredible girth, and I’ve sought to increase my level control beyond your imagining. For you see, I have my own new weapon in my arsenal:

Novation SL MKIII

While it makes nary a sound on its own, these 61 new keys, plus faders, pads, buttons, and wheels give me fine tuned control of many, many synths. I’m limited only by my lack of MIDI splitter (which I will also rectify soon).

Your phrase ‘dangerously thick’ has stuck with me, and that phrase is the foundation of this battle. While I’ve been using the SL MKIII in its native DAWless stomping ground, which is to say, using it to control many different synths simultaneously, but separately, your challenge has brought me around to a simpler and yet more thiccc expression of synthdom: I’ve pointed ALL MIDI channels from the keyboard to channel 1, and set ALL my synths to channel 1 as well. That is, let’s count them, 2 VCOs and 2 digital oscillators from the XD, 3 VCOs from the Volca Bass, and 3 digital oscillators from the Volca FM. I have even more synth voices to stack on there in the future, but that’s the current limit of what I can pull off until I get my MIDI splitter built.

I challenge you to a

Dangerously Thick Bassline Battle

Produce a bassline with as many stacked voices as you think you can handle.

I’ll throw you a bone here: the Submarine reverb on the Minilogue XD is something you’ll probably want for this. I used the Submarine reverb on an NTS-1 to add that to my whole mixer output, absolutely drenching my recording in thiccness previously unknown to humankind.

I will initiate the battle thusly:

  1. ⚔️ CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! ⚔️

I did tremble upon hearing the deepest sub bass pushing the drivers of my headphones to their limits, while not going so far as to distort them–a testament to your gain staging. Not every synth lord can wield so many oscillators at once! It appears that this new SL MkIII weapon is indeed capable of focusing a terrifying amount of energy, while giving you that hands-on control we all crave. Well played, good sir.

I have begun my training and preparation for my response volley. I won’t say that Lord Skrillex Himself is training me, but His angsty mug did, in fact, grace the thumbnail image on my training video. So, I pretty much have Skrillex in my corner. You’ve been warned.

Be there any additional terms or conditions around the challenge? Shall I limit myself to what I can summon in the DAWless™️ Realm?

    1. No limits, but I suppose it would be interesting to hear what you can produce purely DAWless, then a second take after DAW processing. Bring it!
